EDUARD (EDE) REMÉNYI and SOFIA SCALCHI
Sentiment from the solo violinist, with opera singer Scalchi signing her name "In Remembrance of" on the verso
Autograph sentiment signed: "yours truly/E Reményi", "In Remembrance of/Sofia Scalchi Lolli/San Francisco/24 May 1885", 3¾x2¼ (Remenyi) and 6x4 (Scalchi) affixed to a 7x4 sheet. Hungarian violinist and composer EDUARD (EDE) REMÉNYI (1828-1898) studied under Joseph Böhm at the Vienna Conservatory from 1842 to 1845, but was banished from Austria in 1848 for his participation in the Hungarian Revolution. He fled to the United States for several years before returning to Europe in 1852, where he soon after became solo violinist to Queen Victoria. He halted his playing for a number of years, but made a comeback in 1865 with a tour through Europe. He died in 1898 while performing in San Francisco. Italian singer SOFIA SCALCHI (1850-1922) was an operatic contralto (and also a skilled mezzo-soprano) who was a star performer at the Royal Opera House. With her debut at Covent Garden in 1868, Scalchi became an international star, performing with the Covent Garden Company, Mapleson's Company and the New York Metropolitan Opera. Known for her flexible vocal range, Scalchi's most memorable performances include Otello, Falstaff (both by Verdi), La Gioconda (Ponchielli) and Andrea Chenier (Giordano). She was married to Count Luigi Alberto Lolli of Ferrara (hence her marital name in this signature), and thus she was forever known as Countess Lolli. Heavily toned. Right edge notched and frayed. Stains across Reményi's signature. Faint stains intersecting on verso with Scalchi's signature. Light surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
