Clipped signature affixed to a sheet also bearing a candid photo of
the opera singer turned character actor
Clipped Signature: "Eduardo Ciannelli", 3x1, affixed to a
larger sheet which also bears a b/w candid photo of him (3 surfaces). Date
written on mounting sheet (unknown hand) is the date of his death (10-8-69), not
a signing date. Originally an opera baritone in his native Italy,
Eduardo Ciannelli (1889-1969) began appearing in light operas on
Broadway in the 1920s. He transitioned to stage dramas, appearing in such
prestige plays as Uncle Vanya, The Front Page and Saint
Joan, before moving on to Hollywood in the mid-1930s. There he became
a sought after character actor, appearing in nearly 150 films,
including early roles in Gunga Din, For Whom the Bell Tolls and
A Bell for Adano, and extending into the late 1960s (Secret of Santa
Vittoria, MacKenna's Gold). He was a frequent TV guest in the 1950s
and 1960s as well. In 1961, he made a triumphal return to Broadway, winning a
Best Featured Actor Tony for The Devil's Advocate. Signature light
but legible. Fine condition.
