Autograph note signed: "E. Cruz-Coke" in blue ink. 1 page, 3½x5½. Attached is a photograph of the Chilean politician. In full: "El fin de toda politica democratica es de lograr que cada ciudadanos llegue a ser, lo que puede ser". Roughly translated: "The end of all democratic politics is to ensure that every citizen becomes, what they can be". Eduardo Cruz-Coke (1899-1974) was a Chilean politician and statesman, best remembered for his role as a conservative candidate in the country's 1946 presidential election, as well as for his work developing the Chilean health system. Cruz-Coke earned his degree as a medical doctor in 1921, and went on to find the National Association of Catholic Students, which was based on Catholic school teachings. In 1937, he was named Minister of Public Heal, Social Assistance and Welfare, during which he implemented a health program based upon a strictly scientific approach and tackled pressing issues such as maternal and infant mortality. In 1941 Cruz-Coke was elected a Senator for Santiago and five years later was proclaimed the Conservative Party's presidential candidate, but lost after a fellow conservative forced the party's vote to be split. He held his senatorial position until 1957 and spent his last years as an Ambassador to Peru and as the President of the country's National Committee on Atomic Energy. Toned. Worn and soiled.
