The brilliant nineteenth-century writer sends note to a friend, inviting her and her daughters to dine with him at Knebworth, signs name in black ink
Autograph letter signed: "E.B. Lytton" in faded black ink. 1 page, 4½x7¼ folded. Knebworth, Hertford, England. In part: "Dear Mrs. Marsh - As you were good as to say you would com & see me at Knebworth, will you excuse a short notice as I may be here but for a short time and come to me with your daughter or daughters, next Saturday for a [illegible". Gives directions in the post script. Edward Bulwer-Lytton (1803-1873), 1st Baron Lytton was an English novelist, poet, playwright and politician, best known for his extremely popular best-selling novels; he also coined many popular phrases that we still used today such as "the great unwashed", "pursuit of the almightly dollar", dweller on the threshold", "the pen is mightier than the sword", and the opening line "it was a dark and stormy night". His novels include Godolphin (1833), The Last days of Pompeii (1834), Rienzi, Las of the Roman Tribunes (1835), and Harold, the Last of the Saxons (1848); his intricate plots and humorous portrayals of pre-Victorian dandyism often kept gossips busy trying to associate public figures with characters. Bulwer-Lytton also served in Parliament, even reaching the position of Secretary of State for the Colonies in 1858 under Lord Derby's government. He was the father of the Viceroy of India, Robert Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Earl of Lytton. Normal mailing folds. Ink stains throughout. Ink notes on verso in unknown hand. Slightly toned.
