As Louisiana State Treasurer, Burke, who later fled the country when indicted
for embezzling over a million dollars in state funds, signs a school fund check
for $113. 64.
Check signed: "E.A. Burke" as Treasurer of the State of Louisiana,
7¾x3½. New Orleans, Louisiana, 1879 April 5. Check #11, drawn on the
"Current School" account at State National Bank, payable to S. D. Moody for
$113.64. Endorsed on verso "S. D. Moody". Edward A. Burke
(1839-1928) dominated Louisiana politics in the 1870s and 1880s. He managed
the state's 1876 Democratic campaign and was elected State Treasurer in 1878.
Publisher of the New Orleans "Times-Democrat", Burke was reelected. A
reform movement within his party ousted him from office in 1888. In
1889 he was indicted for embezzlement of state bonds amounting to over $1
million. He never stood trial, escaping to Honduras where he lived until the age
of 88. Lightly toned. Cancellaiton punch near center, left. Corners worn.
Top edge slightly worn and creased. Lightly soiled. Otherwise, fine
condition.
