As Louisiana State Treasurer, Burke, who later fled the country when indicted for embezzling over a million dollars in state funds, signs a school fund check for $113.64.
Check signed: "E.A. Burke" as Treasurer of the State of Louisiana, 7¾x3¼. New Orleans, Louisiana, 1879 April 16. Check #12, drawn on the "Current School" account at State National Bank, payable to A. M. Aucoin for $113.64. Endorsed on verso "Aug. Aucoin". Edward Austin Burke (1839-1928) dominated Louisiana politics in the 1870s and 1880s. He managed the state's 1876 Democratic campaign and was elected State Treasurer in 1878. Publisher of the New Orleans "Times-Democrat", Burke was reelected. A reform movement within his party ousted him from office in 1888. In 1889 he was indicted for embezzlement of state bonds amounting to over $1 million. He never stood trial, escaping to Honduras where he lived until the age of 88. Cancellation marks. Lightly creased and toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
