The actor responds to a letter from the Neal Dodd Foundation saying "At this time I can't comply with your request because my charity budget is now to over flowing"
Autograph Letter signed: "Eddie/Arnold", 2p, 6x9. On letterhead of Edward Arnold, Schulberg Studios. Hollywood, California, 1937 March 6. "My Dear Hawes". Signed on page 2. In full: "I had your letter regarding the Neal Dodd Foundation - in fact I have had several communications regarding it from Rupert Hughes and others. At this time I can't comply with your request because my charity budget is now to over flowing - what with three [indecipherable] in the East that I am sponsoring. Then there is Mrs. Abe Lehr's charity and others. I'll keep your letter on file and at some future date I'll take the matter up. I'm glad to learn that you are doing so well with the Fawcett outfit and hope your good luck will continue. Always". Arnold (1890-1956) moved from the stage, and bit parts in silent movies, to starring film roles, beginning with Diamond Jim (1935). He abandoned efforts to lose weight after deciding that his girth increased his prospects for getting character roles. A favorite of director Frank Capra, he played a corrupt boss in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1938) and starred as Daniel Webster in The Devil and Daniel Webster (1941). A staunch conservative who considered running for the Senate as a Republican, Arnold nevertheless worked hard as President of the Screen Actors Guild to protect fellow actors from excesses of the McCarthy era. Staple holes in upper left. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
