EDWARD ARNOLD He fills out and signs a form endorsing Mischa Auer for membership in The Masquers. Document signed: "Edward Arnold", 1 page, 7¼x5½. Hollywood, California, 1939 September 12. Printed Masquers club form, Endorsement of Applicant for Membership, filled out and signed in ink by Arnold. (He has misspelled the applicant's name.) Edward Arnold (1890-1956) moved from the stage, and bit parts in silent movies, to starring film roles, beginning with Diamond Jim (1935). He abandoned efforts to lose weight after deciding that his girth increased his prospects for getting character roles. A favorite of director Frank Capra, he played a corrupt boss in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1938) and starred as Daniel Webster in The Devil and Daniel Webster (1941). A staunch conservative who considered running for the Senate as a Republican, Arnold nevertheless worked hard as President of the Screen Actors Guild to protect fellow actors from excesses of the McCarthy era. Russian-born MISCHA AUER (1905-1967) was cast in his early films as a sinister foreigner, until his comic talents were recognized in My Man Godfrey (1936), for which he was nominated for an Oscar as Best Supporting Actor. The Masquers was an invitation-only social club for actors and the "theatrically inclined," founded in 1925. In the 21st century it has become a repository for film and actor history. Vertical fold creases. Staple holes in top margin at left and right corners. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition. Previously authenticated by JSA.
