EDWARD ASHLEY
The well-known English actor smiles holding an award in 4¼x5 photo,
signs name in black ink
Inscribed photograph signed: "To Clint/ my best/ to you -/ Edward
Ashley" in black ink. B/w, 4¼x5. Ashley (1904-2000, born Edward
Ashley Cooper) was an American actor who got his start in English movies. Always
a bridesmaid but never a bride, Ashley had only four starring film roles, but
nevertheless soldiered on between 1932 and 1988, with roles in almost 60 movies
and TV shows. His dearth of starring roles wasn't for lack of trying. His
Hollywood debut was Pride and Prejudice (1940), and he tried to bank on
his resemblance to Errol Flynn playing a bandit called the Fox in Danny Kaye's
The Court Jester (1956). But Ashley was just another handsome Englishman
in Hollywood in 1940, and Kaye stole all of his thunder in The Court
Jester (and even impersonated Ashley's character!). He kept acting, though,
with roles in potboilers like Herbie Rides Again (1973) and Won Ton
Ton, The Dog Who Saved Hollywood (1976) and as a guest star on TV after
1954. Irregularly cut. Light surface creases. Corners creased. Slightly toned.
Otherwise, fine condition.
