The British historian and politician signs his name with a sentiment in this letter fragment
Autograph fragment signed: "I am,/Dr Sir,/Yours truly,/Edward Baines" in black ink. 3¼x1¾. Edward Baines(1774-1848) was an English newspaper proprietor, politician, and author. Taking an interest in political and social movements, he was led to sympathize with non-conformity and he soon joined the Independents. In 1801, with assistance of party friends, he bought the Leeds Mercury. His contributions to the publishing made it the leading liberal voice in Leeds. The connection of his family with the paper's ownership made them a powerful name in the region. Baines wrote multiple history texts, including History of the Wars of the French Revolution, and History of the county palatine and duchy of Lancashire. His son, Sir Edward Baines (1800-1890), of St Ann's Hill, Leeds, was editor and afterwards proprietor of the Leeds Mercury, M.P. for Leeds (1859-1874), and was knighted in 1880. He also wrote a biography of his father The life of Edward Baines, late M.P. for the Borough of Leeds. Toned. Edges irregular. Affixed to larger sheet along with a 2¼x2½ photo of the signer. Otherwise, fine condition.
