Edward Bellamy (1850-1898) wrote the influential utopian novel
Looking Backward (1887), which imagined the United States in the year
2000 as a socialist community in which everyone received equal pay. (Those
with unpleasant or dangerous jobs were obliged to work fewer hours.) Looking
Backward was the third best-selling book written in nineteenth century
America, surpassed only by Uncle Tom's Cabin and Ben-Hur. No
fewer than 162 Bellamy Clubs were established to discuss the book's ideas.
