EDWARD C. DAVIDSON - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 12/17/1837 - HFSID 1252

EDWARD C. DAVIDSON
Edward C. Davidson sends an autograph letter of condolences on the death of the recipient's brother.
Autograph Letter Signed: "E.C. Davidson", 1p, 8x10. Davidson College, (North Carolina) 1837 December 17. To Cadet Culbertson. In part: "Since the death of brother Augustus, I have thought a good deal about West Point and am fully resolved to go there and reoccupy the place of my deceased brother if I can be so fortunate as to gain the favour of the Managers of your Institution. I applied to McConar who is the representative to this district in Congress, but owing to som (sic) disagreement between him and father in politicks (sic) (as I suppose) he gave me no encouragement, I have written to Mr James Graham of Congress to present my case...." Cadet Culbertson was MICHAEL S. CULBERTSON, a classmate of Augustus W. Davidson. They were admitted to West Point on July 1, 1835. Among their classmates were future Confederate Generals Early and Bragg (admitted 1833), Beauregard (admitted 1834) and Hooker and Ord (admitted 1835). Family records indicate Augustus was born on June 2, 1815 and that "he died before 1838 in Niagara, New York". EDWARD C. DAVIDSON (1820-1892) never went to West Point but joined the service and was a first lieutenant in the Third Dragoons, U.S. Army, during the Mexican War. With integral address leaf, torn at wax seal. Lightly creased, folds, vertical folds touch signature.
