EDWARD CANTON
The dancer sends a letter to John Willis to thank him for his consideration for the Dance World section of Theatre World
Typed letter signed: "Edward Canton", 1 page, 6x7¾. May 10, 1967. In full: "Dear Mr. Willis: Thank you for considering me for inclusion in your Dance World section of Theatre World Magazine. Having lost the form you sent with your request for information, I am enclosing a copy of the biography page from my book. [Page not included] You might note that I am now teaching at the Washington School of Ballet, this information is not included on the biography. Not having posed for a portrait for many years, I would prefer you use the enclosed photograph. I am the one on the left. The rather large gentleman seated at the piano is Paul Higginbotham. He is my accompanist here at the Washington school. If you need any additional information please feel free to ask. Sincerely," Edward Canton (1900-1981) was a Broadway dancer, choreographer, and instructor. He has performed in Broadway productions such as Alma Mater (1935) and The Ballet Theatre (1941). He also choreographed Broadway's Sadie Thompson (1944-45) and Nellie Bly (1946). John A. Willis (1916-2010), active in Theatre World from the beginning, became its chief editor in 1965, holding that position until 2008. Willis is regarded as one of the foremost theatre and film historians of the 20th century. While producing (and presenting) the annual Theatre World Awards, Willis also served on the nominating committee for the Tony Awards. Theatre World, which received its own Tony for Excellence in Theatre in 2001, continues under chief editor Ben Hodges. Lightly toned and edges. Adhesive strip at top left corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
