Photograph signed "Thank you/for your interesting/letter./My best
to you./Eddie Quillan". Blue ink and lead pencil notations in unknown hand
B/w, 9¾x7¾ overall, 9½x7¼ image, one surface. Date stamped on verso: "Dec
2, 1931". According to the labels on verso, this is a publicity photo for the
1931 film The Big Shot, taken by Bert Six.The actress in this
photo is unidentified, but is possibly Quillan's co-star Maureen O'Sullivan.
American actor Quillan (1907-1990) made his first major
feature-film appearance when he co-starred in The Godless Girl (1929). He
went on to star in such films as The Sophomore (1929), Noisy
Neighbors (1929), Big Money (1930) and The Tip-Off (1931).
Among his more memorable credits as a supporting actor were Mutiny on the
Bounty (1935), Young Mr. Lincoln (1939), The Grapes
of Wrath (1940) and It Ain't Hay (1943). Quillan remained active
into the 1980s, appearing as a regular on the TV sitcom Julia
(1969-1970). Lightly soiled, cracked, creased and bowed. Scratched from paper
clip in top left corner, which toush inscription but not siganture. Label
remnants on verso (no show-through). Overall, fine condition.
