The film star types and signs a letter citing his award-winning role
in Mutiny on the Bounty and his role in Grapes of Wrath
Typed Letter Signed: "Eddie Quillan", 1 page, 4¾x7.
Hollywood, California. 1987, October 27.On personal
letterhead. In full: "Dear Teacher...here is my report card: My
favorite motion picture is the original "MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY" starring Clark
Gable, Charles Laughton, with Franchot Tone, Donald Crisp and myself, playing
the part of Thomas Elinson, for which I won the Screen Actors Guild Award, the
first time (and only time) this award was given to an actor who did not star in
the picture. "MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY" will live on for years as one of the great
classics and I am proud to have been in it. I enjoyed working with Charles
Laughton and Franchot Tone but to work and to have so much fun off-screen with
Clark Gable gave me a tremendous amount of joy...he was a great guy. I also
enjoyed working with Henry Fonda in "GRAPES OF WRATH" in which I played Connie
Rivers. This, of course, was a classic, too. I heard that this film played more
often in Russia than any other country in the world. They wanted to show their
people how poor the people in America were and how they had to live. Sorry I
haven't got an apple for you, so please accept the above instead." American
actor Eddie Quillan (1907-1990) made his first major feature-film
appearance when he co-starred in The Godless Girl (1929). He went on to
star in such films as The Sophomore (1929), Noisy Neighbors
(1929), Big Money (1930) and The Tip-Off (1931). Among his more
memorable credits as a supporting actor were Mutiny on the Bounty
(1935), Young Mr. Lincoln (1939), The Grapes of
Wrath (1940) and It Ain't Hay (1943). Quillan remained active
into the 1980s, appearing as a regular on the TV sitcom Julia
(1969-1970). Normal mailing fold. Otherwise, fine condition.
