EDWARD ELLIS
Stern-looking image in pinstripe suit and matching bow tie, promoting Ellis' forthcoming appearance in The Return of Peter Grimm. An extremely rare signature!
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Sol/Edw. Ellis". B/w, 8x10. Promotional caption affixed on verso states that Ellis will soon be seen in the role of Dr. MacPherson in The Return of Peter Grimm. Edward Ellis (1870-1952) was a well-known stage actor from the 1890s, and appeared in two dozen Broadway plays in the first third of the twentieth century. On film, he starred in A Man to Remember (1938) and Main Street Lawyer (1939), but usually played character roles. Among the latter were Shirley Temple's uncle in Little Miss Broadway (1938) and the murder victim in The Thin Man (1934. The title originally referred to the victim Ellis, not to the detective.) Ellis had appeared in several silent films, and was married to silent screen actress Josephine Stevens from 1917 until his death. Saul Goodman (1919-2003), a New York business man by day, pursued his love of film and theatre in the evening, making friends with many celebrities. While other autograph seekers offered album leaves, Goodman presented stars with snazzy photographs, a rarity then, to sign in fountain pen. Scattered light creases and surface marks. Otherwise, fine condition.
