Edward Everett Hale wrote this letter in 1881 to acknowledge receipt of the recipient's note.
Autograph letter signed "Edw. E Hale". 5¼x8¼ letter on Hale's personalized stationery, affixed to a 7¼x11 sheet. With 4x1¾ untranslated French-language manuscript label affixed at top edge of mounting sheet. Jan. 7, 1881. In full: "My dear Mr Edmunds:- I thank for your note,- and have read with much pleasure what you say. But I am afraid I [illegible] of [illegible] in my reference in the little pamphlet. I meant to direct your eye to a little ballad which Mr. Hoar aksed me to send to you. Very truly yrs". Postscript: "My sister asks me to remember her to you". Hale (1822-1909, born in Boston, Massachusetts) was Pastor of the South Congregational Church in Boston (1856-1901) and Chaplain of the U.S. Senate from 1903 to his death. Hale, a prolific author of both history and popular fiction, is best remember today for his patriotic tale Man Without a Country (1863). Lightly toned, stained, creased and rippled. Show-through from adhesive touches body of letter and handwriting on label, but not signature. Adhesive residue on mounting sheet, with tape residue on verso (show-through does not touch signature). Mounting sheet has irregular top, right and bottom edges. Letter is folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
