EDWARD EVERETT HALE
Edward Everett Hale wrote this letter on the letterhead of Ten Times One Is
Ten in 1886 to acknowledge receipt of two notes.
Autograph letter signed "Edward E Hale.". 2 pages, 4¾x7¼, 1
sheet, front and verso, on letterhead of Ten Times One Is Ten. Feb. 22, 1886.
In full: "Dear Mr. Davis:- I am just back from Philadelphia and hav
[sic] both your notes. 1. I am to speak to morrow [sic] at
the [illegible] Memorial. But I will try to be at the office at 1/45 - 2.
By all means let Ms. [illegible] hav [sic] the form I have
[sic] forgotten it. Always truly yours". Postscript:
"The other letter came to me too late for my ad dress [sic] to be
of any use". "Ten Times One Is Ten" is the name of a magazine article that
Hale published in his magazine Old and New in 1870. (This letterhead is
printed with four mottoes from Ten Times One Is Ten: "Look up and not
down;/Look forward and not back;/Look out and not in;/Lend a hand.") This
article spawned a number of charitable clubs that joined under the name of the
Ten Times One Corporation in 1892 and the Lend a Hand Society in 1898. This
group appears to be an earlier incarnation of the corporation or one of the
smaller clubs of which it consisted. Hale (1822-1909, born in Boston,
Massachusetts) was Pastor of the South Congregational Church in Boston
(1856-1901) and Chaplain of the U.S. Senate from 1903 to his death. Hale,
a prolific author of both history and popular fiction, is best remember today
for his patriotic tale Man Without a Country (1863). Lightly toned
and creased. Tape repairs on page 2, which touch signature, postscript and
salutation; show-through touches body of letter. Paper loss at left edge, which
touch body of letter but not signature. Mounting residue on verso and at top
edge (does not touch signature). Missing top left corner. Folded thrice and
unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
