EDWARD EVERETT HALE
Letter of reference written by Edward Everett Hale in 1873
Autograph letter signed "Edward Everett Hale". Pencil
notations at top edge in unknown hand. 1 page, 5x8, ruled paper. Written in
"Roxbury", probably Roxbury, Massachusetts, April 1, 1873. In full:
"Dear Sir: I am very glad Miss Noble referred to me. She has been a
member of one of my Reading Classes, which gives me the oppor-tunity of speaking
very cordially as to her general intelligence, her quickness, and the agreeable
influence which she must have among young people. I have had no opportunity of
judging as to her acquisitions in other lines, - but [illegible] doubt that they
are sufficient for the position she seeks. Indeed she would not seek a position
which she did not think she could fill. Very truly yours". Hale
(1822-1909, born in Boston, Massachusetts) was Pastor of the South
Congregational Church in Boston (1856-1901) and Chaplain of the U.S. Senate
from 1903 to his death. Hale, a prolific author of both history and popular
fiction, is best remember today for his patriotic tale Man Without a
Country (1863). Lightly toned, stained and creased. Random ink smudges.
Neatly torn from binding at left edge. Otherwise in fine
condition.
