EDWARD EVERETT HALE
Edward Everett Hale wrote this letter on his personalized stationery in 1891 to someone whom he believed was his 11th cousin.
Autograph letter signed "Edward E Hale". 2 pages, 5x8¼, 1 sheet, front and verso, on Hale's personalized stationery. July 28, 1891. In full: "My dear Mr. Allen:- My grandmother's grandmother was Thankful Allen of Weston, Mass. Her grandmother's father was Walter Allen,- who died July 8. 1681. Does this mean,- as I shall believe till the contrary is proved,- that you and I are eleventh cousins. And can you tell me any-thing of this Walter Allen. Where was he from and who were his wife & his children. His son Daniel married a Sherman. This accounts for the eloquence and the sound politics of his descendants. Truly yours". Hale (1822-1909, born in Boston, Massachusetts) was Pastor of the South Congregational Church in Boston (1856-1901) and Chaplain of the U.S. Senate from 1903 to his death. Hale, a prolific author of both history and popular fiction, is best remember today for his patriotic tale Man Without a Country (1863). Lightly toned and creased. Folded in quarters and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
