EDWARD EVERETT HALE
Edward Everett Hale sends an autograph letter of regret that he is not able to lecture in January.
Autograph Letter Signed: "Edward E. Hale" on second page, 1¼p, 5¾x7. Boston, 1856 November 13. To "Dear Mr Ashley". In full: "I am afraid I cannot lecture in Northborough in January. If you find as the season advances, that you would wish to have me in February, I shal probably have no engagements then. I am obliged to fix the compensation for Lyceum Lectures at $20.00. Not, of course, that I think mine worth this - for I know they are not. But this is a simple way of keeping out of the vortex which would make me a lecturer instead of a minister, if he lectured too often. Truly and Always Yours". Edward Everett Hale (1822-1909) was Pastor of the South Congregational Church in Boston (1856-1901) and Chaplain of the U.S. Senate from 1903 to his death. Hale a prolific author of both history and popular fiction, is best remember today for his patriotic tale, Man Without a Country (1863). Corners on second page have label remnants and paper loss from previous mounting. Slightly soiled. Overall, fine condition.
