Edward Everett Hale wrote this letter on his personalized stationery in 1879 to say that he sent his latest story early in return for seeing a proof of it.
Autograph letter signed "Edw. E Hale". 1 page, 5x8, on Hale's personalized stationery. Nov. 14, 1879. In full: "Dear Mr. Ward:- Instead of having a Ms. [manuscript] copy made of my story,- as is my wont,- I hav [sic] sent it to you earlier than the time you name,- hoping it might be possible for me to see a proof. Can you manage this? Truly yours". Hale (1822-1909, born in Boston, Massachusetts) was Pastor of the South Congregational Church in Boston (1856-1901) and Chaplain of the U.S. Senate from 1903 to his death. Hale, a prolific author of both history and popular fiction, is best remember today for his patriotic tale Man Without a Country (1863). Lightly toned, stained, soiled and creased. Signature has bled lightly in places but is legible. Folded in quarters and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
