EDWARD EVERETT HALE
Edward Everett Hale wrote this letter in 1878 to turn down an
invitation to speak at a lecture.
Autograph letter signed "Edw. E Hale.". 1 page, 5x8, 1
sheet folded, front and verso. Written in "Roxby", possibly Roxbury,
Massachusetts, Nov. 29, 1878. In full: "Dear Mrs. Smith:- I am sorry to
say that I hav [sic] to decline all invitations to speak a lecture. I
hav [sic] to, - so often, - that I cannot [illegible] charge
the [illegible], even for an ob ject [sic] in which I am so much
interested. I [illegible] you success with pro-found sympathy -
Truly yrs".Hale (1822-1909, born in Boston, Massachusetts) was
Pastor of the South Congregational Church in Boston (1856-1901) and Chaplain
of the U.S. Senate from 1903 to his death. Hale, a prolific author of both
history and popular fiction, is best remember today for his patriotic tale
Man Without a Country (1863). Lightly toned, stained, foxed and
creased. Light tear at right edge. Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine
condition.
