Edward Everett Hale wrote this letter in 1875 to send congratulations to the
recipient - and that he was "sorry that our triumph came at a moment of your
personal sorrow".
Autograph letter signed "Edward E Hale". Pencil note in top right
corner of page 1 in unknown hand.2 pages, 4½x6, 1 sheet folded, front
and verso. Dec. 15, 1875. In full: "Dear Mr. Cobb:- We were all
happier last night than we have been for a long time,- and were all sorry that
our triumph came at a moment of your personal sorrow. I think you may be glad to
know,- or at least, amused to know, that your friend Dr. Miner voted for you. We
are all believers in the third term doctrine at home Truly yrs". Hale
(1822-1909, born in Boston, Massachusetts) was Pastor of the South
Congregational Church in Boston (1856-1901) and Chaplain of the U.S. Senate
from 1903 to his death. Hale, a prolific author of both history and popular
fiction, is best remember today for his patriotic tale Man Without a
Country (1863). Lightly toned, stained and creased. Stain along left
edge from mounting residue on verso, which touches body of letter but not
signature. Light separation at bottom edge of spine. Folded in half horizontally
and once vertically and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
