1p, 4¾x8. No place, no date. To "Dear Mr. Niles, New York, N.Y. In
full: "Have the goodness to mail to Mrs. Daggett. 7 West 57th Street, New
York City. One copy of Our New Crusade. With a slip signing from the
author. Always." Hale (1822-1909) was Pastor of the South Congregational
Church in Boston (1856-1901) and Chaplain of the U.S. Senate from 1903 to his
death. Hale a prolific author of both history and popular fiction, is best
remember today for his patriotic tale, Man Without a Country (1863).
His short story "Our New Crusade: A Temperance Story" was published in 1875.
Pencil date ("Nov 6") in unknown hand at upper left. Lightly creased. Otherwise,
fine condition.
