EDWARD EVERETT HALE
Edward Everett Hale wrote the motto of the Lend a Hand Club - "Look up and not down; Look forward and not back; Look out and not in; - Lend a Hand!-" - on this sheet of his personalized stationery in 1893.
Autograph quotation signed "Edward E Hale". 1 page, 5x5¼, on Hale's personalized stationery. July 5, 1893. In full: "Look up and not down; Look forward and not back; Look out and not in; - Lend a Hand!-". This quotation is the motto of the Lend a Hand Club, a charitable organization founded by Hale in Boston in 1871. It's from an article, Ten Times One Is Ten, that he wrote in 1870 for his magazine Old and New. The Lend a Hand Club later grew into a league of clubs, the Lend a Hand Society. Hale (1822-1909, born in Boston, Massachusetts) was Pastor of the South Congregational Church in Boston (1856-1901) and Chaplain of the U.S. Senate from 1903 to his death. Hale, a prolific author of both history and popular fiction, is best remember today for his patriotic tale Man Without a Country (1863). Lightly toned, soiled, creased and rippled. Show-through from mounting residue on verso touches date but not signature. Folded in half vertically and once horizontally and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
