EDWARD EVERETT HALE. AQS: "Edward E. Hale", 4½x2½. In full: "Look up and not down; Look forward and not back; Look out and not in; - Lend a Hand!" Pastor of the South Congregational Church in Boston (1856-1901) and Chaplain of the U.S. Senate from 1903 to his death in 1909, his patriotic tale, Man Without a Country, was published in 1863. This quotation is the motto of the Lend a Hand Club, a charitable organization founded by Hale in Boston in 1871. It later grew into a league of clubs, the Lend a Hand Society. Diagonal tear at upper left touches 1 letter, was repaired with tape on verso (no show through). Paper clip stain, upper left touches 2 words. Pinhead-size hole at upper blank margin. Lightly soiled and stained.
