EDWARD EVERETT HALE
A note from the Congregational minister and popular author, writing "I am glad to do what you wish"
Autograph note signed: "I am glad to do/what you wish/Edward E Hale", in blue ink, 3x2. Previously affixed to accompanying 6x3½ card. Accompanied by unsigned book photograph. Edward Everett Hale (1822-1909) was Pastor of the South Congregational Church in Boston (1856-1901) and Chaplain of the U.S. Senate from 1903 to his death. As a Unitarian minister, he championed "breaking forever the fetters of Calvinist theology." Hale a prolific author of both history and popular fiction, especially short stories, is best remembered today for his patriotic tale, "The Man Without a Country" (1863). The skillfully rendered detail of this story, intended to bolster support for the Union during the Civil War, led many to believe it was a true story. Toned. Adhesive residue on verso. Corners slightly worn. Fine condition.
