ED RECTOR
Photograph of the P-40 Ace of the American Volunteer Group (AVG), also known as the "Flying Tigers".
Photograph signed: "Ed Rector". B/w, 8x10. Edward Franklin "Ed" Rector 1916-2001) was Vice Squadron Leader of the 2nd Squadron of the "Flying Tigers" under the command of General Claire Chennault, leader of the American Volunteer Group (AVG) in China. He was credited with downing 10.5 Japanese aircraft. The AVG came apart in bits and pieces through the spring of 1942, not by any lack of will, but by circumstances brought about by the attack of Pearl Harbor and the U.S. entry into the war. Rector remained in China, rejoining the regular U.S. military and serving with the China Air Task Force, the successor to the AVG. After WWII, he served on the U.S. Military Assistance Advisory Group in China. When the country fell to the Communists in 1949, Rector assisted in building Taiwan's air force. Rector, who retired from the military in 1962, is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Minor surface creases (not evident head on). Name written (unknown hand) on verso (no show through). Fine condition.
