Autograph Sentiment signed: "Faithfully yours/E.F. Benson",
3x1. Edward Frederic Benson, better known under his professional name
E.F. Benson (1867-1940) was an English novelist, biographer, memoirist
and short story writer. A prolific author, Benson published hundreds of short
stories and books, including The Angel of Pain (1905), David
Blaize (1916) Lovers and Friends, (1921) and As We Were: A
Victorian Peepshow (1930). He also produced three autobiographies,
including Our Family Affairs, 1867-1896 (1920) which details the history
of his parents Edward White Benson (later Chancellor of Lincoln Cathedral,
Bishop of Truro and Archbishop of Canterbury) and Mary Sidgwick Benson.
Still, his most known work remains Mapp and Lucia (1931), part
of the Make Way for Lucia series. Benson was born at Wellington
College in Berkshire where his father was headmaster. He was educated
Marlborough College and King's College, and was later made an honorary fellow of
Magdalene College. Without ever marrying and fathering no children, it is
speculated Benson was most likely a homosexual, as suggested by the overt
homoeroticism in many of his works. He died in London of throat cancer in 1940.
