An Illinois Congressman from 1959-1983, Edward Joseph Derwinski (born in 1926) was the first Secretary of Veterans Affairs, serving under President George Bush from 1989-1992. Derwinski, a Polish-American and WWII veteran, had previously served for one term in the Illinois House of Representatives (1957-1958). President of the West Pullman Savings & Loan Association from 1950-1975, Derwinski's public service also included serving as a delegate to the United Nations General Assembly (1971-1972), Counselor to the Department of State (1983-1987) and Under Secretary of State for Security Assistance, Science and Technology (1987-1989). Lightly creased with folds, lower horizontal fold through signature. Pin holes at upper left margin, date stamp at upper right edge. Fine condition.
