Typed Letter signed: "Edw. J. Hart", 1 page, 8x10½. Washington, D.C., March 17, 1939. To Joseph Kelley, President of the New Jersey State Society, in full: "Dear Mr. Kelley: Permit me to acknowledge the receipt of the recent kind invitation of the New Jersey State Society to be present at the Annual Congressional Reception and Dance to be held under its auspices on Friday evening, March 24th. I thank you very much for your thoughtfulness in extending the invitation and regret deeply to advise you that because of engagements in New Jersey on the date in question, it will not be possible for me to attend. Sincerely yours" Edward Joseph Hart (1893-1961) was an American politician and US Representative who served New Jersey's 14th district from 1935 to 1955. During his 20 years in office he served as Chairman of the New Jersey Democratic State Committee for 9 years (1944-1953). He was also chairman of the House Committee on Un-American Activities and the House Committee on Merchant Marine and Fisheries. Normal mailing folds. Fine condition.
