EDWARD STEICHEN

Edward Steichen lauds Katharine Cornell's vibrant acting in 1924 Vanity Fair letter.

ALS: "Steichen", 1p, 8¼x10½. No place (but New York), c. 1924. On "Vanity Fair" letterhead in full: "To TheMagnificently beautiful & baffling feline of 'Tiger Cats'. I vividly remember seeing an expert angler playing a mountain brook trout he had hooked - and never saw anything as teemingly alive as that trout. That rare quality of aliveness emanates from you to such an extent that the 'acting' of the rest of the company seems like the rustling of dead leaves - Brava and Vivat". Steichen, a pioneer in American photography and co-founder of the Photo-Secession Group, is perhaps best known for his "Family of Man" exhibition and his "misty" photographs, which he created by brushing silver salts and other chemicals onto the print to create or eliminate images. Written to actress Katherine Cornell who opened on Broadway on October 21, 1924 in Tiger Cats. Creased, horizontal fold touches the upper loops of the "S" and "t" of Steichen. Shaded at upper margin, stray ink marks at upper blank area. Nicked and torn at left and right edges, upper right corner torn away.
