EDWARD JENNER
Publishers leather bound, bicentennial edition of his book, An Inquiry into the Causes and Effects of the Variolae Vaccinae
Book unsigned, 78 pages, 8½x11. An Inquiry into the Causes and Effects of the Variolae Vaccinae, by Edward Jenner. Birmingham: Classics of Medicine Library, 1978. Published on the 200th anniversary of Jenner's original publication of the book, with publisher's leather binding. Edward Jenner (1749-1823) observed that dairymaids who had contracted cowpox, a relatively benign malady, were immune to later infection by smallpox. Dr. Jenner vaccinated James Phipps, a boy of eight, with matter from cowpox vesicles on the hands of a milkmaid in 1796. Several weeks later, the boy was inoculated with smallpox but did not contract the disease. Dr. Jenner published his findings in Inquiry into the Cause and Effects of the Variolae Vaccinae in 1798.In 1979, the World Health Organization announced the eradication of smallpox (except for a few laboratory samples). Jenner's method was fundamental in the fight against smallpox, and is the cornerstone of modern immunology. Pages lightly toned. Fine condition.
