Typed letter signed: "Edward L. O'Neill" in black ink. 1 page, 8x10½. Written on personal U.S. House of Representatives letterhead. Washington, D.C. December 22, 1937. Addressed to Mr. Joseph P. Kelley, President of the New Jersey State Society. In full: "I am very happy to accept membership and to serve on the Board of Governors. I have felt that we needed some sort of an outfit of our Jerseymen and will be very glad to help. Sincerely". Edward Leo O'Neill (1903-1948) was a Democratic politician from New Jersey who served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1937 to 1939. After serving in the U.S. Navy from 1919-1023, O'Neill built a successful career in real estate in Newark. He unsuccessfully ran for election in 1934, but was successful two years later, only to be unsuccessful for reelection in 1938. After his departure from the Senate, he served as a lieutenant in the Naval Reserve from 1939 to 1940, and as captain of the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps in 1942 and 1943. O'Neill later served as commissioner of the Essex County Board of Taxation from 1940 to 1945, returning to real estate until his death in 1948. Normal mailing folds. Toned. Creased throughout.
