EDWARD LIVINGSTON. Partly printed DS: "Edw Livingston" as Jackson's Secretary of State, 1p, 8x10. Washington, 1831 October 7.In full: "I certify, That John N. Moulder, whose name is subscribed to the paper hereunto annexed, is now, and was at the time of subscribing the same, a Justice of the Peace, in and for the County of Washington, in the District of Columbia, duly commissioned and qualified, and that full faith and confidence are due to his acts as such." Paper signed by Moulder is not annexed. EDWARD LIVINGSTON, younger brother of Robert R. Livingston, who swore in George Washington as 1st U.S. President in 1789, was Congressman from New York (1795-1801) and Mayor of New York City (1801-1803). He moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1804 and served on General Jackson's staff at the Battle of New Orleans in 1815. Elected to Congress from Louisiana, Livingston served in the House (1823-1829) and the U.S. Senate (1829-1831) and becamePresident Jackson's Secretary of State (1831-1833) and later U.S. Minister to France (1833-1835). Eagle vignette at top center. 1½-inch diameter paper seal affixed with red wax at lower left. Browned and frayed at right edge. Fine condition.
