EDWARD L. YOUMANS
ALS as editor of Popular Science, explaining that he will welcome an article if the writer "can make the matter clear, which is the main thing."
Autograph Letter signed: "E. L. Youmans", 2 pages (front and verso), 5½x8½. New York, 1876 April 19. On letterhead of Popular Science Monthly to "Dr. Sugis" [?]. In full: "You are quite right - we have had no article yet on the Laryng…[?], which remains a good subject to tread. But we are somewhat [phrase illegible] which we will when we have had the pleasure of meeting you at some point. But we are so attended with articles and well supplied with writers that we can put nothing into the Monthly promptly and prefer them to wait their chances. A familiarity with [?] proper and explaining all about it to those who will be able to formulate we shall be glad to have; and if satisfactory will print it early in next year. Your reputable address leads me to think you can make the matter clear, which is the main thing. Take your time and send us something when you can. Very truly yours". Edward Livingston Youmans (1821-1887) founded the Popular Science Monthly, now Popular Science magazine, in 1872. Youmans, who wrote science textbooks and advocated scientific education, also promoted the theory of evolution and the "Social Darwinism" of Herbert Spencer, and sought to make a scientific case for alcohol prohibition. Popular Science remains a popular monthly today. Toned and soiled. Two vertical two horizontal fold creases. Notch at center left edge. Corners creased and chipped. Multiple unknown stains throughout letter. Torn at top and bottom center edges.
