his collection.
Typed Letter signed: "E.P. Carville", as U.S.
Senator, 1 page,8x10½.
Washington, D.C., 1945 August 3. On personal United States Senate
letterhead addressed to Mr. Ralph Errington Ward, Jr., Washington, D.C.. In
full: "Dear Sir: My signature on this letter is my auto-graph, which you
might add to your collection. Very sincerely yours," Affixed to an 8½x11
page (2 surfaces). Accompanied by a transmittal envelope bearing
Carville's ink stamped frank, postmarked Washington, D.C. August 3,
1945, affixed on verso of the 8½x11 page (2 surfaces). Edward Peter
Carville (1885-1956) was born in Mound Valley, Nevada. He graduated from the
University of Notre Dame in 1909 and began practicing law in Elko, Nevada later
that year. He served as the District Attorney of Elko County (1912-1918),
District Judge of Elko County (1928-1934) and United States Attorney
for Nevada (1934-1938). In 1939 he became the Governor of Nevada and
served the state until resigning in 1945 when he was appointed to the United
States Senate as a Democratic Senator for Nevada. He served from July 25,
1945 until January 3, 1947, losing his seat after an unsuccessful re-nomination
campaign in 1946. He continued to practice law in Reno, Nevada until his death
on June 27, 1956.From the collection Ralph Errington Ward
(1926-2009) a fighter pilot and squadron commander in the China-Burma-India
Theater of World War II. Ward became President and CEO of Cheseborough-Ponds,
Inc., transforming the cosmetics firm into a major home product conglomerate.
