E.R. Squibb", 1p, 8½x7 lined sheet. Brooklyn, New York, 1869 April 10. Receipt of items
bought from Edward R. Squibb, M.D. by the Kings Country Medical Society. Items
listed include a walnut case, locks, hinges, screws, lettering drawers, ballot balls, a roll book,
"Letter & Foolscap Paper", a bottle of ink, a gold pen, pen rack and inkstand, a bucket, a
dozen towels, rubber cloth, chinaware and goblets and a half dozen plates for a total of
$126.04. Two-cent revenue stamp affixed at lower left margin. Docketed in unknown hand on
verso. In 1858, physician and pharmacist Edward R. Squibb (1819-1900) founded a
chemical and pharmaceutical laboratory in Brooklyn. In 1892, the firm, which was
dedicated to the production of consistently pure medications, became E.R. Squibb &
Sons. Although he didn't live to see it, Squibb's lifelong crusade for safe, reliable
pharmaceutical products became a reality with the passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act in
1906, the year after his sons sold the firm.In 1989, Squibb, which had grown into a
multinational operation, merged with Bristol-Myers. Today, Bristol-Myers Squibb carries 28
product lines with sales in the $20 billion range worldwide. Lightly creased with folds, not at
signature but touching four words of writing (all legible). ¼-inch tear at lower left edge above
revenue stamp. Heavily shaded on verso, rectangular show through at left portion and vertical
strip at right portion. Overall, fine condition.
