EDWARD STETTINIUS, JR.
His signature on card affixed to a page with a large color magazine image of him
Signature: "Edward Stettinius, Jr.", 3½x2¼ card, affixed to an 8½x11 page (2 surfaces), with a color magazine illustration of Stettinius attached above it. Affixed on verso is a typed letter from Stettinius' secretary, dated November 20, 1945, stating that the autograph would be forthcoming. Edward R. Stettinius, Jr. (1900-1949) was FDR's last Secretary of State (1944-1945). He was present at the United Nations Conference on International Organization which resulted in the United Nations' founding in San Francisco on June 26, 1945. The following day he resigned his office. President Truman had made clear to Stettinius that he wanted his own candidate, James F. Byrnes, to head the State Department, and offered him the position of U.S. representative to the United Nations which he accepted. Before coming to the State Department, Stettinius had been an executive of General Motors and US Steel and administrator of the Lend-Lease program. From the personal collection of Ralph Errington Ward (1926-2009). Ward, a fighter pilot and squadron commander in the China-Burma-India Theater of World War II, went on to become President and CEO of Cheseborough-Ponds, Inc., transforming the cosmetics firm into a major home product conglomerate. Lightly toned around edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
