Signature: "Edward Séguin", 3½x3¾ slip. French doctor Edward Séguin (1812-1881)
emigrated to the US in 1848. Séguin favored compassion and understanding in dealing with
the intellectually disabled, and believed that their condition could be remedied or at least
alleviated. Believing intellectualy disabilites to be a neurological condition, he
advocated a regimen of physical exercise and sensory stimulation, accompanied by
vocational training. He wrote several books, including Idiocy: Its Treatment by the
Physiological Method (1866). Many of his physical exercises are still used in special
education courses. Irregularly trimmed, with a printed word "Dollars" at upper right edge.
