EDWARD M. "TED" KENNEDY and HUGH DOWNS
Black and white photograph of Edward Kennedy being interviewed by Hugh Downs
Photograph signed: "Ted Kennedy", "Hugh Downs". B/w,10x8. The younger brother of President John F. Kennedy and the youngest son of Ambassador Joseph Kennedy, EDWARD "Teddy" KENNEDY (1932-2009) was first elected to the U.S. Senate from Massachusetts in 1962 to fill the seat vacated by his brother the President- serving until his death. Maturing from "kid brother" of the President into a national spokesman for liberal causes, he challenged incumbent President Jimmy Carter for the Democratic nomination in 1980, but fell short. Beset by personal tragedies, some of his own making, Ted Kennedy remained an eloquent and important voice in the Senate and in his party. His son Patrick is a U.S. Representative from Rhode Island. HUGH DOWNS (born 1921) began his broadcast career after college in radio-transitioning to television in 1945.
Downs' vast successful assignments have been that of Jack Paar's sidekick on The Tonight Show (1957-1962), emcee of the quiz show Concentration (1958-1968) and host of The Today Show (1962-1972). He is best known for having hosted or co-hosted 20/20 for more than twenty years (1978-1999). The Broadcaster of the Year in 1990, he has also narrated many documentaries. Fine condition.
