EDWARD M. "TED" KENNEDY and EDWARD W. BROOKE III
Both sign on this envelope bearing a sticker honoring Massachusetts
Envelope signed: "Ted Kennedy" and "Edward Brooke" as U.S. Senators from Massachusetts, 6½x3½. 10-cent stamp affixed, postmarked Boston, MA, June 18, 1974. Massachusetts sticker, 1¼x2, affixed at left margin. The younger brother of President John F. Kennedy and Senator Robert Kennedy, and the youngest son of Ambassador Joseph Kennedy, EDWARD "Teddy" KENNEDY (1932-2009) was first elected to the U.S. Senate from Massachusetts in 1962 to fill the seat vacated by his brother the President- serving until his death. Maturing from "kid brother" of the President into a national spokesman for liberal causes, he challenged incumbent President Jimmy Carter for the Democratic nomination in 1980, but fell short. Beset by personal tragedies, some of his own making, Ted Kennedy remained an eloquent and important voice in the Senate and in his party. His son Patrick served 8 terms as a US Representative from Rhode Island. EDWARD W. BROOKE III (1919-2015), previously the Attorney General of Massachusetts, was a Republican U.S. Senator from Massachusetts 1967 to 1979, was the first Black elected to the Senate by popular vote, and the first since Reconstruction. Among Brooke's achievements were Title IX of the 1972 Education Act, promoting equal education opportunities for women; and extension of the Voting Rights Act. He was the first Republican Senator to call for President Nixon's resignation. Typed address to collector. Slightly soiled. Rippled at left margin. 2 pinholes at upper left margin and on flap. Otherwise, fine condition.
