EDWARD M. "TED" KENNEDY
Kennedy sends a brief letter of thanks to a supporter and friend in San Francisco
Typed Letter signed: "Ted Kennedy" as U.S. Senator, 1 page, 6x9. Washington, D.C., 1976 February 17. On Senate letterhead to Mrs. Adolph Shirpser, San Francisco, California. In full: "It was wonderful hearing from you, and I enjoyed reading the article from the San Francisco Chronicle. I see that you are as active as ever, and I would just like to extend my warmest appreciation for your generous friendship to all the Kennedys over the years. With best wishes, Sincerely". The younger brother of President John F. Kennedy and the youngest son of Ambassador Joseph Kennedy, EDWARD "Teddy" KENNEDY (1932-2009) was first elected to the U.S. Senate from Massachusetts in 1962 to fill the seat vacated by his brother the President- serving until his death. Maturing from "kid brother" of the President into a national spokesman for liberal causes, he challenged incumbent President Jimmy Carter for the Democratic nomination in 1980, but fell short. Beset by personal tragedies, some of his own making, Ted Kennedy remained an eloquent and important voice in the Senate and in his party. His son Patrick is a U.S. Representative from Rhode Island. Clara (Mrs. Adolph) SHIRPSER was an alternate delegate to the Democratic National Conventions of 1952 and 1960. She worked on Adlai Stevenson's campaigns in California, and on JFK's 1960 election campaign there. She published a memoir, Behind the Scenes in Politics (1981). Fine condition.
