EDWARD M. "TED" KENNEDY
Kennedy write regarding funding for a bilingual television project in Austin, Texas
Typed Letter signed: "Edward M Kennedy", as U.S. Senator, 1 p, 8x10½. On official letterhead. Washington, D.C., 1974 May 14. To Herman Goldberg, Associate Commissioner, Bureau of Equal Educational Opportunity, Office of Education, Washington, D.C. In full: "I would like to call your attention to the April 29 application from KLRN-TV in Austin, Texas, for funding of the CARRASCOLENDAS bilingual television project. If funding is not assured soon, CARRASCOLENDAS will be forced to stop production. As this would mean the demise of the widely praised first nation-wide effort at television for Spanish speaking children, this would be most unfortunate. Your provision of the proposal review status to KLRN-TV would be appreciated at your earliest convenience. Sincerely." The younger brother of President John F. Kennedy and the youngest son of Ambassador Joseph Kennedy, EDWARD "Teddy" KENNEDY (1932-2009) was first elected to the U.S. Senate from Massachusetts in 1962 to fill the seat vacated by his brother the President- serving until his death. Maturing from "kid brother" of the President into a national spokesman for liberal causes, he challenged incumbent President Jimmy Carter for the Democratic nomination in 1980, but fell short. Beset by personal tragedies, some of his own making, Ted Kennedy remained an eloquent and important voice in the Senate and in his party. His son Patrick is a U.S. Representative from Rhode Island. HERMAN R. GOLDBERG, a Jewish athlete who played catcher for the U.S. exhibition baseball team in the 1936 Berlin Olympics, later became an educator and school superintendent and worked for the Office of Education in Washington, D.C. The American Association of School Administrators, founded in 1865, has over 13,000 members in the U.S. and abroad. The organization's presidents are elected to one-year terms. Lightly creased. Staple holes in upper left. Date stamp in blank lower margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
