EDWARD M. "TED" KENNEDY
Kennedy sends thanks to educator for his contributions to American education
Typed Letter Signed: "Edward M Kennedy" as U.S. Senator from Massachusetts, ¾p, 8½x11. Washington, D.C., 1987 August 20. On his United States Senate, Committee on Labor and Human Resources, letterhead to Dr. Herman R. Goldberg, ERGO Associates, Inc., Bethesda, Maryland. In full: "Thank you for the note and information announcing your departure from the American Association of School Administrators (AASA). We can all appreciate the time and efforts you have provided American education. As I prepare to celebrate my 25th year in the Senate, I am pleased by the progress we have made in education. Your career in this area is an impressive one and I hope you continue to share your views and concerns in this area. Again, thank you for the note and best of luck." The younger brother of President John F. Kennedy and the youngest son of Ambassador Joseph Kennedy, EDWARD "Teddy" KENNEDY (1932-2009) was first elected to the U.S. Senate from Massachusetts in 1962 to fill the seat vacated by his brother the President- serving until his death. Maturing from "kid brother" of the President into a national spokesman for liberal causes, he challenged incumbent President Jimmy Carter for the Democratic nomination in 1980, but fell short. Beset by personal tragedies, some of his own making, Ted Kennedy remained an eloquent and important voice in the Senate and in his party. His son Patrick is a U.S. Representative from Rhode Island. HERMAN R. GOLDBERG, a Jewish athlete who played catcher for the U.S. exhibition baseball team in the 1936 Berlin Olympics, later became an educator and school superintendent and worked for the Office of Education in Washington, D.C. The American Association of School Administrators, founded in 1865, has over 13,000 members in the U.S. and abroad. The organization's presidents are elected to one-year terms. Lightly creased.
