EDWARD M. "TED" KENNEDY
Kennedy writes to a school principal about the importance of educating America's youth
Typed Letter signed: "Edward M Kennedy" as U.S. Senator, 1p, 8x10¾. Washington, D.C., 1969 December 16. On Senate letterhead to Jack Dodds, Principal, Riley Elementary School, Lincoln, Nebraska. In full: "Thank you very much for your nice letter. I was pleased that you took the time to write to me. I hope that your interest in government and its representatives will continue to grow as the years pass. A well informed, well educated young America is our country's best hope for the future. Again, my thanks for your letter, and my best wishes to you. Sincerely". The younger brother of President John F. Kennedy and the youngest son of Ambassador Joseph Kennedy, EDWARD "Teddy" KENNEDY (1932-2009) was first elected to the U.S. Senate from Massachusetts in 1962 to fill the seat vacated by his brother the President- serving until his death. Maturing from "kid brother" of the President into a national spokesman for liberal causes, he challenged incumbent President Jimmy Carter for the Democratic nomination in 1980, but fell short. Beset by personal tragedies, some of his own making, Ted Kennedy remained an eloquent and important voice in the Senate and in his party. His son Patrick is a U.S. Representative from Rhode Island. Lightly creased. Slightly toned at edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
