EDWARD V. ROBERTSON
The U.S. Senator of Wyoming signs a letter to Ralph E. Ward for his collection.
Typed Letter signed: "E.V. Robertson", as U.S. Senator,
page, 8x10½, No place, 1947 May 19. On letterhead of The United States
Senate Committee on Armed Services addressed to Mr, Ralph Errington Ward, Jr.,
Melrose Highlands, Massachusetts. In full: "Dear Mr. Ward: This will
acknowledge your letter of April 28 describing your hobby of collecting
autographs and other information concerning members of Congress. I am pleased to
be able to add my signature to your collection and, at your request, am sending
this let-ter to you in a franked envelope. Your self-addressed, stamped envelope
is returned herewith. Very truly yours," Affixed to an 8½x11 page, with transmittal envelope bearing O'Mahoney's
ink stamped frank, postmarked Washington, D.C., May 20, 1947, affixed on
verso (3 surfaces). Edward Vivian Robertson (1881-1963) was born in
Cardiff, Wales.In his early life he attended schools in Wales and fought
in the Boer War with the Third Battalion of the Welsh Regiment from 1899 to
1902. Robertson immigrated to the
United States in 1912 and settled in Cody, Wyoming, where he raised
livestock and worked in the mercantile business. In 1942 he was elected to
the United States Senate as a Republican from Wyoming. He served from
January 3, 1943 until January 3, 1949, when he retired from public life after
running an unsuccessful reelection campaign. From the collection Ralph
Errington Ward (1926-2009) a fighter pilot and squadron commander in the
China-Burma-India Theater of World War II. Ward became President and CEO of
Cheseborough-Ponds, Inc., transforming the cosmetics firm into a major home
product conglomerate. Adhesive on verso (affixing letter to the page). Normal
mailing folds. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
