extends his congratulations to a retiring government worker.
TLS: "Ed", 1p, 7¼x10½. Washington, D.C., 1967 November 3. On
letterhead of the "St. Louis Globe-Democrat", Washington Bureau, to Mr.
Benjamin Mandel, Senate Internal Security Subcommittee, Senate Office
Building, Washington, D.C. Begins: "Dear Ben". In full:
"I will miss seeing you on the Hill and having the privilege of tapping your
vast store of knowledge and wisdom. You have been a diligent and dedicated
public servant and the nation is in your debt. You have more than earned an
easier pace, and I know you will have many happy years of relaxation. With all
good wishes to Mrs. Mandel and yourself, Sincerely". BENJAMIN MANDEL
worked on the staffs of the House Un-American Activities Committee and
then the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee before retiring from
government service in 1967. EDWARD W. O'BRIEN was a longtime
Washington correspondent for the "St. Louis Globe-Democrat". We have found
references to his asking questions at press conferences given by President
Dwight D. Eisenhower (1956, 1959) and to articles he later (1982) wrote,
with fellow correspondent Sue Ann Wood, concerning the FBI. Lightly creased with
folds, not at signature. Slightly shaded at lower blank margin. Fine
condition.
