EDWARD W. O'BRIEN
The longtime Washington correspondent for the "St. Louis Globe-Democrat" extends his congratulations to a retiring government worker.
TLS: "Ed", 1p, 7¼x10½. Washington, D.C., 1967 November 3. On letterhead of the "St. Louis Globe-Democrat", Washington Bureau, to Mr. Benjamin Mandel, Senate Internal Security Subcommittee, Senate Office Building, Washington, D.C. Begins: "Dear Ben". In full: "I will miss seeing you on the Hill and having the privilege of tapping your vast store of knowledge and wisdom. You have been a diligent and dedicated public servant and the nation is in your debt. You have more than earned an easier pace, and I know you will have many happy years of relaxation. With all good wishes to Mrs. Mandel and yourself, Sincerely". BENJAMIN MANDEL worked on the staffs of the House Un-American Activities Committee and then the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee before retiring from government service in 1967. EDWARD W. O'BRIEN was a longtime Washington correspondent for the "St. Louis Globe-Democrat". We have found references to his asking questions at press conferences given by President Dwight D. Eisenhower (1956, 1959) and to articles he later (1982) wrote, with fellow correspondent Sue Ann Wood, concerning the FBI. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Slightly shaded at lower blank margin. Fine condition.
