EDWARD WAGENKNECHT
The literary professor and critic signs his name in blue ink
Autograph sentiment signed: "Sincerely Yours/ Edward Wagenknecht/
April 22-1974" in blue ink. 3¾x2 card. Edward Wagenknecht (1900-2004)
was an American literary critic and teacher, who specialized in 19th century
American literature, who worked as a professor at establishments such as the
University of Chicago and Boston University, as well as a book reviewer for
papers such as the Boston Herald, The New York Times, the
Chicago Tribune, and The Yale Review. Wagenknecht wrote about his
favorite authors, captured in his book Calvacade of the English Novel
(1943) and Calvacade of the American Novel (1952), where he
discusses Henry James, John Milton, Geoffrey Chaucer, and Theodore Roosevelt. He
practiced a form of criticism pioneered by French critic Charles Augustin
Sainte-Beuve where he would explore the full range of a writer's works, then
form an overall picture of the writer's point of view and technique, mostly in
characterization, style and moral issues. Toned. Corners rounded. Pencil notes
on verso in unknown hand. Otherwise, fine condition.
